Akinleye holds solo exhibition 'Each Passing Day' in Lagos

It is generally believed that a picture tells a million stories. Each passing day, spectacular events take place in different parts of the country, but it takes someone with an eagle’s eyes to use his camera to capture them.
One of the few great photo journalists in Nigeria, whose photos have told unforgettable stories, Akintunde Akinleye, showcased his works in Lagos last week Sunday, April 19, 2015 and the exhibition attracted people from all walks of life.
Tagged: “Each passing Day’, the solo exhibition unveiled Akintunde’s documentation of Nigeria in his 15-year-old career in photojournalism. The exhibition is also classified to mirror a number of separate phenomenon and daily activities of the Nigerian citizens.
Crucial to his documentation of the post military era in Nigeria, are the trials, tribulations and joys of Nigerian citizens as they struggle to achieve a better standard of living. Some of the pictures are mostly about social, political and physical landscape of Nigeria.
Also, some of the images were taken out from different documentary projects and spot news events, but motivated by the Nigerian space during the last decade and now. Each Passing Day showcased a review of Akintunde’s style, good taste for aesthetics and activism.
Speaking on why he’s showcasing his works, Akintunde said, although he has exhibited some of his works in many countries of the world, the current exhibition is his major show. “I needed to showcase my works to people because most of them don’t know my works. For example, there is a picture I took in 2006 and I saw it somewhere and was angry. There was an argument over its owner. That is how the urge to exhibit my works was born.”
Commenting on Akintunde works, the Acting Head, Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Mrs. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, said the exhibition shows that hard work pays. “Akintunde has done photojournalism for 15 years and we have not had this kind of outing before. They have concluded an arrangement and told him that the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited wanted to sponsor his solo exhibition. That confirms what we teach people in school that hard work pays. While one is working, people are watching. He’s doing his work and enjoying himself and giving his best to his profession and people were watching. Today, they are all glad. The turn-out is quite impressive. We should be proud of our own and we should continue to promote the works of our own,” said.
Generally, a lot of prefer to attend events and take societal photographs, but Akintunde’s works are unique, what is your take on that? She was asked. “Some people in different professions are jobbers, while a few have the calling. Of course, Akintunde has the calling. People will take your photograph, print it, give it to you and expect gratification. You can see that his works are quite different. Let’s do our jobs with passion. I am a teacher, I love teaching and I give it my all. I know too well that he loves his job. Anything photography, Akin is there. His photographs tell you stories. Let us love our jobs. If you are in a profession because of pecuniary gains, you are not likely to go far,” Ogwezzy-Ndisika added.
Also speaking on Akintunde’s works, the Director of Omenka Gallery, Mr. Oliver Enwonwu, stated that he was not expecting anything less. “Akintunde is a brilliant photographer. He is respected all over the world. He is operating at the peak of his profession and his works are very impressive. He documents everyday living and iconic events including explosions in different parts of Nigeria. Some of these things are taken for granted but he is doing his works in a powerful way which brings us to think about these things. His photographs are award-winning works. It shows that photography is carving its niche in the Nigerian art market and space,” he emphasized.
Born in 1971, Akintunde is the first Nigerian Photographer to have been awarded a prize in the prestigious World Press Photo, Netherlands in 2007 with an iconic photograph of a man rinsing soot from his face at the scene of an oil pipeline explosion in Lagos, December 2006. It was the beauty of a tragedy which claimed the lives of 269 people that made the official signage of the 19th edition of international photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France in 2007.
An award fellow of the National Geographic Society- All Roads photo project, Akintunde has attended conferences and seminars in editorial and documentary photography in Ethiopia, Kenya and Lagos. He has made presentations of his work and papers at the University of Stanford in the United States, Amsterdam and other major cities around the world.
In June 2008, while attending a fellowship programme at the University of Texas at Dallas artistes' project, he produced a body of work that culminates oil production in Texas. He was a resident fellow of the Thami Mnyele Art foundation in Amsterdam.
In 2012, Akintunde was nominated for Prix Pictet photography award on sustainability for his work : Delta, A vanishing wetland.
He has read for two master's degrees in Educational Technology and Mass Communication at the University of Lagos and a post-graduate diploma in Journalism at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, after a Bachelor's degree in Social Studies.
Akintunde has had his work exhibited in Washington, Los Angeles, New Mexico, Lagos, Amsterdam, Graz, Bamako, Madrid, Munich, U.K and Pordenone in Italy. He had once been commissioned for assignments in Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria and currently pursues projects in African culture and traditions!
He lives in Lagos and works for Reuters in Nigeria.
The exhibition was powered by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited and Lagos photo, among others.
Below, are some of the photographs being showcased at the exhibition which kicked off on Sunday, 19, 2015 at red Door Gallery, Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, and will end on May 3, 2015.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE COLLAPSES, KILLS 7 IN KANO

No fewer than seven people were killed in Kano on Sunday when a pedestrian bridge at Dorayi quarters, Kano, collapsed, the state Police Command said.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Magaji Majiya, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
Mr. Majiya said the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. when the bridge, which was still under construction, caved in and collapsed on a car, which was passing underneath it.
“The workers at the site had warned motorists not to pass because they were working on the bridge but the driver of the taxi allegedly ignored the warning.
“So, the moment he moved; before he passed, the bridge caved in and collapsed on the vehicle, which led to the death of seven persons,’’ the police spokesperson said.
According to him, the vehicle has since been evacuated from the scene while the corpses have been deposited at a hospital morgue.
Mr. Majiya said the police had also commenced investigation into the cause of the incident.

Nike Oshinowo

Nike Oshinowo

Nike Oshinowo
he curtains fell on Season One of ‘Late Night with Nike Oshinowo’ at a swanky party held at the Moorhouse Sofitel late evening, 266th Feb 2015. The beautifully lit poolside party glistened as the star of the night, Nike Oshinowo, glowed. With guests including members of Nike’s company, AOE Events & Entertainment Ltd., the LNWNO production crew, sponsors and partners – First Bank, Etisalat, Arik Air, Pernod Ricard, AIT and The Lagos State Government (represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism & Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Disun Holloway), Nike glowed in the adulation.

Ms Oshinowo treated the audience to a jocular speech, as champagne flowed.  In typical fashion, Nike was flawless, unruffled and beautiful to the eye.  It was pure delight to watch the host do the ‘Shoki’ and take ‘Selfies’ with her guests.
The night was a well-deserved celebration of a successful first season and an exclusive sneak-peek preview of Season Two which premieres on Thursday, 5th March 2015 on AIT at 11:00pm.

Prof Chris Nwaokobia Jnr's sister dies in the hands of kidnappers

Prof Chris Nwaokobia Jnr shared this information on Facebook:
DEATH BE NOT PROUD....!!!
Nigeria deals me a second fatal and lethal blow in 9years. In February 2006 it was my younger sister Ruth Uche Nwaokobia who died in a ghastly car accident along the Lokoja/Abuja road 3weeks after graduating with a First Class degree. Cause of death, the narrow, decrepit and bad Lokoja axis of that road, an interjection that has led many to untimely death.
Just yesterday 22 April, my immediate younger sister Mrs Pat Amitaye nee Nwaokobia died in the hands of kidnappers who allegedly shot at her car, overpowered her driver and took her away, she died whilst being pulled to their hideout. Cause of death the festering criminality that joblessness and unemployment engenders as well as the security deficit that ill governance permits.
Such sad fate has befallen millions of families in a nation that undermines the primacy of human lives.
Please pray for me, pray for my family and pray for the many whose fate is as melancholic as mine. Pray for our nation so that the CHANGE we fought for berths for our nation a new paradigm.
God bless Nigeria.

President hands over to Buhari on May 29

The Federal Government on Wednesday changed its mind on the earlier plan for President Goodluck Jonathan to formally handover power to the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on May 28 as against the May 29 Democracy Day.
Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, had last week said Jonathan intended to have the formal handing over done at a dinner on May 28 so that the administration can reserve May 29 for the incoming government.

NO SPACE FOR PDP DEFECTORS

The All Progressives Congress on Wednesday formally shut its doors against members of the Peoples Democratic Party wishing to join its ranks.
The party also enjoined members and leaders of the ruling party to stay put where they are and rebuild their party to play its new found role as the main opposition party.
It admonished the PDP to come to terms with the cold, hard reality that its fortunes have since plummeted and that it is now in opposition.
The APC made its position public in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja.
According to the APC, the leadership of the PDP is not even waiting to be approached before fleeing to the APC.
Mohammed said, “PDP leaders and members are falling over themselves shamelessly and swearing undying allegiance to the APC.
“Well, in case they did not get the message of the President-elect and our National Chairman, we want to repeat it in very blunt terms: PDP leaders and members, you are not welcome in APC.
“Please stay in your party, but if – as we suspect – you cannot survive in opposition, then, take a walk, quit politics.”Mohammed was reacting to a communiqué issued by the PDP, in which it alleged that the APC was harassing its members and that it was trying to turn Nigeria into one party state.
The APC said the fact that the PDP devoted a substantial part of the communiqué, issued after the inaugural meeting of the its National Working Committee and Governors/Senators-elect, complaining about alleged harassment and intimidation by the APC, instead of strategizing, shows that it was yet to come to terms with the reality on ground.
It also observed that the out-going ruling party still does not understand the enormity of the challenges awaiting it as an opposition party.Mohammed said, “The truth of the matter is that the PDP is scared stiff of being in opposition. We don’t blame them as they have neither the capacity nor the commitment to be in opposition.
“A party that stood for nothing but looting and rent collection will naturally be afraid of being in opposition, where there is nothing to loot or rent to collect.”The APC also admonished the PDP to stop whining over an alleged plan by the APC to use the Election Petition Tribunals ‘to truncate and subvert the freely given mandate by the people in the states and constituencies’, saying it amounts to blackmail.

JONATHAN WON’T CONTEST IN 2019 – BABATOPE

• Says PDP will field strong Hausa/Fulani candidate to run against Buhari in 2019.
A member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has said President Goodluck Jonathan will not run for the Presidency in 2019.
He explained that the party would shop for a strong Hausa/Fulani candidate to run against Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in 2019.
Babatope, who is also a member of the party’s elders caucus, spoke with our correspondent in Lagos on Wednesday.
He described the outgoing President as a leader, who had done his best in uplifting the nation’s democracy, adding that Nigeria would forever remember Jonathan as a committed leader, who kept the nation as one despite several challenges.
The 72-year-old said he was sure that the President would not seek to contest the 2019 presidential election.
The former transport minister added, “Although the people of the South-South have the right to present a candidate for the election, I’m sure the President will not contest. He will lead us against the All Progressives Congress.
“The President has set himself apart as a great Nigerian leader, who is committed to seeing Nigeria blossom into a great democracy. He has laid a solid foundation for the nation’s democracy and he would forever be remembered.
“The President will not contest the 2019 presidential election. The PDP will look for a strong Hausa/Fulani presidential candidate to contest against Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.”
