Attempted jailbreak at SSS headquarters, Abuja: Situation under control

There was attempted jailbreak early hours of this morning at State Security Service (SSS) headquarters, Abuja.
"At 0715 hours, the Service suspect handler went to the detention facility within the Headquarters to feed the suspects. One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff. His attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others. The gun shots attracted the attention of the military with whom we have an understanding of mutual assistance in the event of any threat. Half of a Yellow Sun premieres April 25 in Nigeria

A scene in the movie

The movie adaptation of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, which made its world premiere at the 38th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Canada, will be opened in Nigerian cinemas on Friday, April 25, 2014.
Directed by prolific UK-based Nigerian playwright, Biyi Bandele and produced by Andrea Calderwood (HBO’s Generation Kill, The Last King of Scotland: winner of three BAFTAs and an Oscar), the movie was premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival before it was later screened at the BFI London Film Festival. The film was released in Australia on March 27 and will be released in the United Kingdom in April 11, and in the US this summer.
It features talented actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Genevieve Nnaji, Onyeka Onwenu, John Boyega and Wale Ojo.
Half Of A Yellow Sun, a novel published in 2006 and was awarded the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2007, is a tale of two women during Nigeria’s independence and Nigerian-Biafran War between 1957 and 1970.
The film explores the tale of twin sisters Olanna (Thandie Newton), a professor’s beautiful young mistress who abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm and Kainene (Anika Noni Rose). They are daughters of a rich businessman who follow different paths. Olanna falls in love with Odenigbo (Ejiofor), a university professor and a revolutionary activist who fathers a child by another woman, while Kainene is having a romantic affair with a white British writer (Joseph Mawle), who is in Nigeria to teach.
Olanna and Kainene flee to the south-eastern region of Nigeria where the Republic of Biafra is declared during the civil war. Olanna accepts Odenigbo’s illegitimate daughter as her own and as they flee. They have to live in increasing poverty, while Kainene moves from running a major company for her father to overseeing a refugee camp. The story celebrates the two ladies’ strength in the face of adversity.
Biyi Bandele did well as the director. The setting, makeup, costume and locations are perfect for the movie.

In its examination of how Chief Awólowọ re-made Yorùbá history in modern times, the book combines the perspectives and disciplinary methods of anthropology, historical sociology and political science.
Adebanwi, who was a public affairs journalist in Nigeria for many years but is now an Associate Professor at the University of California-Davis, USA, demonstrates how the corporate agency of the elite transformed the modern history and politics of the Yorùbá. The argument is organized around the ideas and cultural representations of Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ, the central signifier of modern Yorùbá culture. Through the narration and analysis of material, non-material and interactional phenomena – such as political party and ethnic group organization, cultural politics, democratic struggle, personal ambitions, group solidarity, death, memory and commemoration – the book examines the foundations of the legitimacy of the Yorùbá political elite.

2014 Writers’ Conference holds on April 5

The maiden edition of the annual Connect Nigeria Writers’ Conference will hold on 5th April 2014.
With the theme: ‘The Business of Writing’, the conference will be held at the Afe Babalola Auditorium, University of Lagos, is in partnership with the Mass Communication Department of the university.
The event, according to its organizers, is part of ConnectNigeria.com’s Corporate Social Responsibility objective to promote knowledge development and skill acquisition in Nigeria. It is primarily targeted at undergraduates aspiring for careers that require writing as its basic skill.
Managing Director of Connect Nigeria, Mr. Emeka Okafor, said writing is a technical skill and as such it is imperative that the academic community and business establishments work together to enable easy transition of students into the professional environment. He added that the benefits accrued from such are immense.
In his words, “Connect Nigeria is a socially responsible organisation and since we understand that getting gainful employment is a challenge for graduates, we cannot turn our backs against this problem. I believe there is no better time to intervene than now.
“If we can employ one or two fresh graduates from the university community, that would be fine; but that will not reduce the teeming unemployment in the country. But when we work towards sensitizing students on what they can do to sharpen their skills and improve their abilities, then their chances of getting good jobs increases. Beyond that, however, many of these students can start their own businesses and employ other people if they can merge their writing skills with entrepreneurial abilities. Our objective is to empower people with information.
“The advancement in technology today is at a stage whereby all you need to start a writing business is the skill, a computer and internet connectivity and the Writers’ Conference will provide the precise platform for the students to learn from the experts on how to improve their skills and prepare for life after graduation.
“Though originally established as a company that organises information about Nigeria with the aim of making such information easily accessible and resourceful for Nigerians, Connect Nigeria, has added another dimension to its business offering. As part of its vision to empower Nigerians with useful information, Connect Nigeria organised an e-Business Fair in October 2013, which was aimed at connecting small business owners with service providers such as banks and ICT firms on how to build and harness modern electronic technologies with their business operations. The event, which attracted over 2000 attendees, was supported by the Central Bank of Nigeria, Microsoft, Diamond Bank and eTranzact, among other corporate establishments.

On the ocean to "Jerusalem”

Bybiowefhiaoi Samuel Ufot Ekekere
A ship

Have you had the opportunity to travel over water, on a canoe, boat or
cruise liner? Maybe you have or you have not. A journey over water
could be especially interesting if you are opportune to travel to a
distant country like "Jerusalem."I still dream of porting someday at
"Jerusalem." I am somewhere in "the school of hard knocks" praying
that opportunity to make this dream comes by.
You have a "Jerusalem" you yearn to live in. It could be the dream
job, home, spouse, or child. You may currently be at "down casted
land" praying and hoping the opportunity to visit "answered
prayers" port comes true. Sometimes you query your mind how you are
going to leave "no money continent" for "wealth and riches continent."
As much as you trouble that weak man inside you, he often tells you
how help less you are. The Good news is, a ship just ported and it is
taking interested travellers free. You can literally walk into the
ship provided you have a "certified passport" and a "visa."Are you
perturbed? You may be.  Littered around us are almost free
opportunities. The problem though has being that we close our eyes to
these opportunities and hope that "our horses" would appear for a
dream ride. Chances are that the answers to what we so want is always
so close, closer than we thought. As much as you have these
opportunities lurking around, you cannot just jump into them. You have
to qualify and get a pass. Your pass is the object of hardwork.

When you do have the visa, its uhuru. Jump straight into this free
ship. The visa separates us from the rest. Everyone wants to achieve
one great feet or the other but only a handful will go ahead and
achieve. Why is this so? This is because only a few can get that visa
to "achievement land." Getting the visa could be really challenging
especially when you have to get through "Difficulty
consulate."However, trust your main man, "uncle persistence," and your
madam at the top, "hardwork." You do have to consult them and let them
work for you.

Thank God, you have passed the normal rendezvous of dreaming. Now you
are in "possibilities" ship. Welcome on board friend, its nice meeting
you here. You do need a new mentality and some highflying friends so I
am introducing you to my main man and pal, victor and his army
"champions team". They are off the hook ready to pull along with you
to "Jerusalem."Their job is to help people like you with their vast
experience as regards issues of life. They are in the right position
to advice you having being where you are and where you want to be.

Here is captain "Faith."Do not mind how he smiles and laughs, he is
the best at what he does and he is ready to give you that great ride.
You can trust his safe hands to direct this ship. If you do need any
help, please call "miss hope."Find" miss comfort" to give you that rest
you so need.

I thought we would have a safe ride through this journey having had to
get into the best free gift ever. The truth is, even when the
conditions are very suitable, challenges often arise. Sure "mocking
storm" stands before us and says, "You think you can truly succeed in
this journey? You must be joking friend."Have no fear; major
breakthroughs come after periods of storms. Yeah, you may be querying
your mind over what you have done wrong and you might not have done
any wrong. The fact remains, that in the oceans of life, storms must
rage. You do understand that if you must reach the other side of the
ocean you just have to remain calm.  Meet aunty "patience."I have
known her through all the major storms I have had to go through and
she has being a good friend.

Thank God, you have made it through the storm. We are nearing "casting
down" port. You sure know all your fears at this point have to be cast
down. Do you like the sight you see? Sure you do. The dream is here.
Finally, you can give a grand smile. The city's sparkling light
envelops you. Remain calm do not hurry to rush out. This city often
gives people like you a grand entrance. Its inhabitants know that to
get here is not easy. Therefore, when you have managed to get over the
storms of life, it is worth celebrating.

Welcome the newest entrant to "Jerusalem."That is your introduction to
Jerusalem. Its mind blowing especially because you had no notion your
fate could change within a few moments. Now that you have reached your
desired end, take a walk around "authority" boulevard. There is none of
its type elsewhere. You, once a mediocre person now has enormous power
at your disposal, power to make change and impact too. In addition,
your home is at "blissful" sea beach. You remember, this is the home
you always envisaged you would live in. When you have taken your rest,
you will go see your new place of employ. Its "Destiny" plc. With a
posh limo to suite your executive position. Yeah, I forgot to tell you
about that dream woman "Miss Fortune" you have always desired but she
seemed beyond your reach, here she is your next-door neighbor.  We are
hoping to see you consummate this relationship.

Arrow of God at 50: Re-examining concepts of power, responsibility and governance · Achebe’s niece, Ngozi, speaks on Achaba’s death

By ADA DIKE
A year after Nigeria’s literary icon and scholar, Professor Chinua Achebe, died, his family, friends and colleagues are celebrating 50th anniversary of one his novels, Arrow of God.
Prof Achebe

Ngozi Achebe

Commenting on the celebration of 50th anniversary of Arrow of God and reminiscing her uncle’s demise, a writer and Chinua Achebe’s niece, Ngozi Achebe, said: “It has been a year March 21, 2013, since the world woke up to the news of Chinua Achebe’s passing. For me personally it was a day of great sorrow for one is never really prepared for the death of a beloved one. In that year a lot has happened as time has rolled on relentlessly. There’s an adage that declares that death is final, but is it?
“In the movie, Gravity, George Clooney playing the astronaut Kowalski, declares back to earth with some desperation after some heart stopping moments in space, “Here’s hoping you have insurance Houston – damages to Explorer catastrophic.”
“I said something similar, or at least thought it, a year ago. Nigeria had lost one of its most salient and insistent voices – quiet but with the reverberations of thunderclaps and potencies of prophecies. But I think my pessimism may have been premature because his heirs both political and literary have continued the fight in the different arenas that mattered to him. Yes, Achebe lives on indeed!” Ngozi said.
The author of a novel, Onaedo- The Blacksmith’s Daughter also stresses: “Importantly too, his book, Arrow of God, came of age this year celebrating a half century. While Things Fall Apart is regarded as his magnum opus, there is no doubt that Chinua Achebe himself had a special love for Arrow of God. “In the preface of the second edition he declared, tongue in cheek no doubt, that no pater familias worth his salt would be so unwise as to choose favourites amongst his offspring,” she added.
“However, he did say that it was the one book more than any other that he was likely to be caught reading. I know what he meant. It was also my own favourite too until I met and fell in love with his 1987 Anthills of the Savannah and never looked back. Many events have been slated all over the world this year to celebrate this true literary masterpiece. On a more personal note, of course, his loss is still hard to bear but must be accepted. Chinua Achebe was here for a purpose which he clearly fulfilled and has moved on. It is left for his millions of heirs to take up his battle cry,” the medical doctor in the United States of America said.
Arrow of God was published in 1964. It shares similar settings and themes with its predecessors - Things Fall Apart and No Longer at Ease, the novel centres on Ezeulu, the chief priest of several villages in South Eastern Nigeria, who confronts adversaries to his office, colonial powers and Christian missionaries in 1920s.
Shocked by the power of British intervention in the area, Ezeulu orders his son to learn the foreigners' secret. As with Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart and Obi in No Longer at Ease, he is consumed by the consequential tragedy.
Prolific writer and Chairman of the National Organising Committee for the Arrow of God @ 50 Celebrations, Dr. Wale Okediran, who explained the essence of the celebrations, along with his team such as professor and former head of the English Department, University of Lagos, Nigeria, Akachi Ezeigbo, poet and literary icon, Denja Abdullahi and the Chairman, Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Lagos Sate Chapter, Mr. Femi Onileagbon, among others,  have organised an international colloquium comprising symposia spread across five cities in Nigeria as part of the activities marking the celebrations.
With the theme: Arrow of God @ 50: Literature, Leadership and National Unity, scholarly and insightful papers would be entertained at the symposia in five of the seven centres of the celebration namely: Lagos, Ibadan in Oyo State, Awka in Anambra State, Sokoto and Otuoke in Bayelsa.
The following sub-themes were presented as guides to would-be paper presenters: “(A) Conflict Generation and Resolution in Achebe’s Arrow of God. (B) Ezeulu in Achebe’s Arrow of God and the Post-Independence African Leadership Style. (C) Literature and the Quest for National Unity: Achebe’s Arrow of God as a Paradigm. (D) Managing Changing and Transitions in a Pluralised Society: Achebe’s Arrow of God in Reference. (F) Africa at Crossroads of Development and Good Governance: What has Literature got to do with it? (G) Achebe’s Arrow of God: The Igbo Socio-Political Leadership Worldviews and the Lessons for Africa. (H) Traditionalism versus Modernism in Chinua Achebe’s Arrow of God, and so on,” Okediran said.
“Also, there would be nationwide literary competition among selected secondary school students. 10 students will be picked from 10 private secondary schools and 10 students from public secondary. Copies of Arrow of God will be given to these students to read for one month before the day of the literary competition which will involve quiz, reading comprehension and one act dramatic enactment by participating schools of any part of the book that exemplifies the main conflicts of the narrative world of the book. Proposed date for the colloquium is April 23 to May 3, 2014.”
Concerning the global celebration of Arrow of God, he said that the book’s publication would be celebrated in more than 70 countries around the world, beginning from India with a conference at The Maharaja Sayajirao University in January 2014. From there to Bangladesh, Russia, Spain, Italy, Israeli, Turkish Universities, and universities in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Russia and Romania, Central America – Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Australia and New Zealand, and so on.
Its organisers explained further that However, the main thrust of the book, which many readers and critics have adjudged the most intricate and most accomplished of Achebe’s novels, is its exploration of the question of power and leadership as exercised by the elites of a community, reflected in the character of Ezeulu and his equally powerful antagonists in the book. The choice of the community is left with at the end of the book which arose out of the power play between Ezeulu and his adversaries is very instructive to Nigeria of today and Africa with regards to presence or lack of development as a result of inappropriate exercise of power and leadership. This book is also relevant in the contemporary Nigerian discourse on leadership, democracy and national unity.
“It will therefore be very auspicious to use the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the publication of the book to re-examine the concepts of power, leadership, responsibility and good governance in Nigeria and Africa as derivable from the vagaries of Ezeulu and his confederating communities in the Arrow of God.
“Amidst the seemingly obdurate challenges of globalisation, this conference presents an appropriate foray to use the story in Arrow of God for inward search and necessary projections on the past, present and future of our shared community experiences especially in the areas of leadership, democracy and nation building.
“The colloquium, in the spirit of the proposed National Conference in the country will also negotiate the ever-deepening social divides and increased alienation among sub-sections of the Nigerian society by unravelling the democratic fabric on which the future stability and legitimacy depends. It will pursue the argument that citizens in shared communities must forge the path, and exemplify strong, vibrant partnership to meet up with the demands of national unity and globalisation.”
Achebe was born on November 16, 1930 and died on March 23, 2013 at age 82, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America.
The author and social critic was buried on May 23, 2013 in his hometown, Ogidi, Anambra State, Nigeria. His burial which could be likened to an international festival attracted large number of dignitaries from all walks of lifesuch as: President Goodluck Jonathan, Ghanaian President, John Mahama, former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, former Secretary General of Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, the host, Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, Governors Roachas Okorocha of Imo, Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta and Martin Elechi of Ebonyi,
Others were members of the literary community, clergy and the diplomatic corps from Canada, Germany, America and Ghana. Also, former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Senator Chris Ngige representing Anambra Central, Senator Andy Uba representing Anambra South and Prof Laz Ekwueme, among others.
Though he is gone, people all over the world are celebrating his novel, Arrow of God. Set in Eastern Nigeria in the early twentieth century, Arrow of God is a political and cultural novel that captured the clash of two cultures and their inability to contend peaceably with their differences. Achebe, according scholars, portrayed the disrupting effect that externally imposed power system (The British) has on an internally imposed power system (African tradition and customs). He portrayed the true colour of colonialism as it walked over existing traditions, destroyed age long customs and shattered norms and lores to institute its authority.
