Information
reaching Newswatch Times has it that the Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation
Programme (NSRP) has been conferred a Civic Responsibility Recognition Award
for its works and efforts at promoting peaceful conducts during the 2015
general elections.
It
was also gathered that, at an elaborate event held at the main bowl of the
National Stadium Abuja, the National Orientation Agency recognized NSRP for its
contributions to the peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections in Nigeria.
According
to a statement made available to Newswatch Times, there was palpable anxiety
and fear leading up to the 2015 general elections. “Certain international and
local institutions, notably the US government, predicted a likely breakup of
the entity called Nigeria, in 2015. The campaigns were high pitched, involving
hate speeches and dangerous statements and conducts.
“NSRP
engaged and supported critical state actors and institutions especially those
working on peace and security to deepen the message of peace and prevent a
recurrence of the episodes of violence witness after the 2011 general
elections.
“It
is in recognition of these efforts and many of its other works, that NOA deemed
it fit to recognize NSRP. In a statement issued by the Director General of NOA,
‘National Orientation Agency is honouring key institutions and individuals who
played decisive roles in working towards the peaceful elections outcome that we
are enjoying presently. I have been directed to inform you that you have been
selected to receive the NOA Civic Responsibility Recognition Award in this
regard’.
“Other
individual and institutional recipients include; Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Mr. Kofi
Annan, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, The European Union
Delegation, the African Union and Defence Headquarters among others,” the statement
revealed.
It
further stated that the award is further evidence to NSRP’s growing impact on
the peace and conflict architecture in Nigeria.
The Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Programme is a
DFID funded, British Council managed initiative aimed at helping Nigerians
better manage conflict and ensure the reduction in cases of violent conflict,.
