A 200 Level student of Lagos Teaching Hospital (LUTH) School of Nursing, Idi-Araba, Musumola Oladipo, was crowned Miss Virginity 2015 on August 15, 2015.
The 19-year-old Ogun State indigene defeated about 50 virgins who participated in the contest to emerge the winner, while 15-year-old Adebusola Kasim, of Ogudu Senior Grammar School became the first runner-up and Ikimat Isiaka, 15, of IFS College Owode, Ajegunle in Ikorodu, won the third position. Parts of the criteria used for selecting Miss Virginity 2015, according to the chief judge of the contest, Princess Ada Dalyn Dike, were based on appearance, charisma, poise and intelligence.
Reacting on how she felt emerging Miss Virginity 2015, beaming with smile, Oladipo said she feel honoured for holding on to that principle of the pride, where she could stand upright, raise her  shoulders high that she’s still a virgin. “It means that I know my worth and my essence and that goes to say that I have control over my body,” she said.
Explaining further, she said she guarded her virginity carefully despite pressure from both male admirers and some of her classmates, who must have lost their dignity.

In her words:  “One thing I learnt from my mother is that you don’t drive them away or become too proud. You just sit them down and ask them why they want to date you. Then you make them see reasons.  I do tell them that I can’t have a misplaced priority now because my focus is my education,” Oladipo enthused and added that some of her friends who had lost their virginity pride see it as a norm, maturity and being sociable. “But it is none of those points.”
She advised girls to know that being ‘holy’ sexually is not actually for their parents, but for themselves and their future and promised to use her office as Miss Virginity 2015 to draw awareness to girls that virginity is necessary and should be celebrated.
Speaking on the rationale behind The Virgins, the founder of the programme, Princess Adunni Adediran, was excited about this year’s turnout and gave thanks to God for making the project, which started in 2007, a success.
According to her, “If you don’t have sex before marriage, there will be peace in your husband’s house. There will be no room for suspicion even when you go out. Your life will be sexually transmitted diseases-free. Young girls who are victims of Vesico vaginal fistula (VVF) will be free from the disease. This happens because the mother is not old enough to have a baby.
“Barrenness is rampant now because there is large scale abortion and diseases. By abiding by our teachings, insanity which sets in as a result of heartbreak will not be there. When a man dumps a woman, some girls who can’t take the shock might develop mental problem.  Also, there are too many cases of single parents these days because when boys impregnate them, they would deny and abandon the girls,” she said.
Adediran started the programme as a reaction to the activity of a medical doctor, who regularly hosted girls who visited him for abortion. “I was sad in my spirit and in my heart that I started hearing the voice of the creator which said ‘Go and help them, go and give virgins something, go and praise them’ the dream came 11 times,” she explained.
An Associate Professor in Guidance Counselling with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the Matron of The Virgins, Dr. Mrs. Oluwayemisi Pitan, share an experience by saying that there was a day she went to counsel students in a school, not up to two virgins were found in the whole of Junior Secondary School 1 and 2.  She then advised girls to avoid some things that might lure them to lose their pride such as skimpy dresses, walking alone in the dark, associating with promiscuous friends, visiting immoral places and eating foods or taking drinks that change their feelings. She also advised them not to be arrogant.
In her words: “Virginity is a pride, but there is a time for a girl child to get married. So, girls should not be full of themselves. They should not plan to carry virginity to eternity. At a point in time in their lives, they will lose the virginity to marriage. It is a pride to take it into marriage, but they should not let it be too late. That is to say that at a time in their lives, they will see some guys coming to talk to them, telling  them they like  them, love them and want to marry them. They should make sure they are approachable and accessible,” she advised the virgins.
The event, which took place at Surulere Local Government Council, Onilegogoro, Lagos, was graced by the 50 virgins’ parents, the Patron of The Virgins, Alhaji Adewale Abiola (Rado); Deputy Patron, Mr. Titi Durojaiye; Chief Imam Y. S. Kofoworola who led the opening prayer; Head of Department and Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Surulere LGA, who represented the Executive Secretary of Surulere Local Government Council; among many others.
