In a bid to encourage writers and also take literary profession to the next level, Governor Peter Obi Anambra State has donated the sum of N2 million and a plot of land in Awka, Anambra State for writers centre.
The recipient of the gift, Mrs. Chika Unigwe, broke this news on a social media.
According to the winner of the $100,000 Nigeria Prize for literature 2012, “when Gov. Obi came for the award ceremony of the 2012 Nigeria Prize for Literature, I shared my dream of building a writer's centre. On the 15th of July, Gov. Obi presented us with a plot of land in Awka for the proposed centre, and a cheque of two million Naira. Now the hard work begins. I hope we find enough corporations willing to bring this dream to fulfilment,”
Unigwe said.
Concerning the name of the centre, she said she would soon come up with a name for the centre “to avoid confusing the proposed writers’ centre with the Okigbo Foundation, as it’s already happening, I have decided to rename it. The excitement remains!”
