The Prize for
Contemporary African Photography (POPCAP) is calling on contemporary photographers
from all over the world
to apply for a prize.
Speaking to Newswatch
Times in Lagos last Monday, POPCAP’s Administrative Officer, Angela Maria
Nyffeler, said: “We have a jury selecting five winners every year. And we take
these winners from one global exhibition to the other. We give them a lot of
visibility, network and contacts for them to spread out their wings and
hopefully, take off in the art-world,” she explained.
Nyffeler further said
that the competition began over four years ago and added that POPCAP’s fifth
anniversary is scheduled for early next year. “We are based somewhere in Europe
but the project is everywhere in the world because the submission is online.”
Also speaking, the
Artistic Director, POPCAP, Benjamin Fuglister, hinted that they brought the
past five winners to this current exhibition in Lagos and will take them to other
major international exhibitions in many parts of the world. “We also give away a
residency to the five winners- outside of Africa for ns and Africa for non
Africans.” Commenting on how applicants have been reacting to the competition,
Fuglister said they normally receive more 1000 entries every year. The call for
entries which is open to artists of all ages and has no entry fee is open from
November 7, 2015 and ends in February 2016.
POPCAP’15, the international
photography competition for contemporary African photography, has partnered
with LagosPhoto to present its exhibition in Lagos during the festival. This
year’s winners: Filipe Branquinho (Mozambique), Tahir Carl Karmali (Kenya), Zed
Nelson (Uganda), Zied Ben Romdhane (Tunisia), and Romaric Tisserand (France)
executed photographic projects taken on the African continent or that deal with
the African Diaspora. POPCAP 15 at LagosPhoto opened on October 25, 2015
at YabaTech in a vibrant outdoor display.
