Dr Alonge cutting the ribbon of the new wing of the Hospital
The City of David Parish of The Redeemed Christian Church of God under its Healing Stripes Hospital commissioned its expanded dialysis centre and a brand new dental unit. It also re-launched its popular charity shop, It’s New to Me.
The dialysis centre and dental unit were commissioned by Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, Executive Governor of Lagos State, represented by Dr. Jemilade Adegoriola Longe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health.
The Healing Stripes Hospital is a specialised health care facility where quality healthcare services are provided at subsidized rates. The Hospital was established in May 2010 as part of its Christian Social Reform. The hospital has attended to over 13, 000 patients 5, 482 patients have received care free of charge through the church welfare programme. The goal is to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible, affordable and reliable to the community.
The dialysis centre, which added 10 more machines to its operations, was opened in September 2013 to serve the needs of patients with kidney disease. Statistics show that 30 million Nigerians are suffering from
kidney disease. However, only 200 machines are available to serve them, far below the requirement of 12,000 machines. The expansion of the dialysis centre makes a contribution of filling the gap.

MINISTERIAL LIST: FALANA, OYINLOLA, ODIMEGWU OTHERS UNDERGO DSS SCREENING

There are strong indications that the Department of State Service, (DSS) has completed a screening process for some of the ministerial nominees to make up the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Among the list of those who were said to have been screened by the DSS are, former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, Femi Falana (SAN), a former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a former finance commissioner in Lagos State, Mr. Wale Edun and Former Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Limited, Mr. Festus Odimegwu.
Others in the list are, Abubakar Malami (SAN), former Chief of Army, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazu (retd.); an former chief executive of the Federal Inland Revenue, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui-Okaru;.
Vanguard gathered from a source very close to the presidency who pleaded anonymity that the aforementioned nominees had appeared before the DSS for their screening at the weekend.
However, the nominees are yet to give any confirmation on the supposed screening which may not be far-fetched from the fact that appointments of this nature are treated cautiously in the official circle.
It was gathered that no fewer than 20 nominees had been so far screened by the DSS operatives since the exercise started.
Recall that the President had indicated in a chat with journalists in Accra, Ghana, on Monday that he would keep his promise of announcing names of his ministers this month.
Our source revealed that the screening process by the DSS involved conducting background checks on the careers of the nominees and operatives were also checking for records of the nominees with anti-graft and security agencies.

Lessons from stage play “Palmwine Drinker”

ABIODUN OMOTOSHO
The name Papa Ajasco
is not an uncommon household name in stage plays in Nigeria.
He is an award winning and a prolific actor. This is not the first performance of this prolific actor on stage in Lagos or the first performance of the lead actor Papa Ajasco in TerraKultre, he had earlier performed at the TerraKultre opening ceremony sometime in Lagos. The play “Palmwine Drinkers” one of the Ogunmola Stage play has almost 20 characters and Lanpe-(Papa Ajasco) as its lead character.
Main message of this Kola Ogunmola stage play is that dance and music is interesting. It is about a Palm Wine Drinker who all his life likes drinking and all of a sudden, his Palm wine tapper died and went into a trans and coming back to life not knowing his palm wine tapper did not die. The essence is for people to sit down and write beautiful stories and compose songs and to put everything together to form a perfect play.
Director, Lagos State Council for Art and Culture, the organizer of the Play, Mrs. Olaitan Otulana affirms that effort worthwhile have been put into the bi-monthly stage play and promised not to relent in the organisation effort in promoting future event of such even through the media despite distractions.

POLICE TO ARREST UNAUTHORISED USERS OF SIREN NATIONWIDE

Tony Nwajei's photo. The Nigeria Police Force said in Abuja on Tuesday that it would arrest any person not listed in the categories of persons authorised to use siren in the country.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had in 2012 listed the categories of persons entitled to use siren.
They are; President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker, their deputies, state governors and service chiefs.
Others are: the Inspector-General of Police, General Officers Commanding , Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), as well as Commissioners of Police.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, acting Assistant Commissioner of Police, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the police would rely on the government circular on use of siren.
“We will still go by the Federal government circular in implementing the directive,“Kolawole said.
She said that the rate at which siren was being used in the country had reduced drastically because of the efforts of the police.

PDP vows not hang President Buhari's portrait in their offices

Tony Nwajei's photo.
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has refused to hang the official portrait of President Muhammadu Buhari at the party’s national secretariat, checks by The PUNCH have revealed.
Over 100 days after the President assumed office, the PDP has yet to hang his portrait at any of the offices in its Wadata House national secretariat, located at Zone 5, Abuja.
The party has also said it would never put Buhari’s portraits on its walls though it has removed that of the former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who ruled on the platform of the PDP.
“We will never hang his portrait in this office, because President Buhari is not known to our party. He is not a leader of our party and therefore we will never put his portrait here. We are a political party, very partisan and therefore, we are not going to hide that,” National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, told our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.

I DID NOTHING WRONG BY APPOINTING PEOPLE FROM APP, CPC AND APC –BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari, in an interview with BBC Hausa, yesterday, says his government has gone far in identifying looters, especially those involved in crude oil stealing and explains why it is taking him time to prosecute the culprits. He also gave insight into the appointments he made so far. Excerpts
Ever since you came to office, the issue of security has been your priority. What is the present security situation?
One of the decisions we took soon after we came into office was to change the service chiefs and we overhauled the infantry. We mandated the military chiefs to change the infantry, re-train them, equip them with adequate weapons and put trained and qualified commanders for the soldiers. The three states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa know the successes being recorded now. They can attest to that. And the other parts of the country, too, are coming back to normal life. Places like Kano, where business was crippled has started to pick up. And along the Damaturu – Maiduguri road, up to Lake Chad, security has improved. So the people around the flash points know that success is being recorded.
But despite this success, suicide bombers have continued to strike. Do you think this renewed effort will also end the suicide incidences?

EX-MINISTER DARES BUHARI TO PUBLISH LOOTERS NAMES

A former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Nduese Essien, on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to publish names of treasury looters who had returned the stolen funds.
Essien made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
According to him, publishing the names of the looters will make more impact in the fight against corruption.
“President Muhammadu Buhari should publish those names that have willingly returned stolen wealth or those who have been forced to return stolen money.
“Let the public know how much has been returned, where it is paid into and its ultilisation.
“We don’t want a situation where money is returned and we don’t know where the money has gone to,” he said.
Essien called on the government to ensure that recovered fund was used to develop the country and in the interest of the masses, who had been deprived.
He lauded the government’s anti-corruption war, saying that it had made people to sit up.
“People are now afraid of indulging in corrupt activities for fear of being investigated after leaving office,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the anti-corruption war would work under Buhari, because he would not condone corrupt practices.
The former minister added that the war should be extended to persons working in the Presidency.
“Anti-corruption crusade is not suppose to hinge entirely on the past; it should also prevent those who are working with the President presently from getting involved in corrupt activities,’’ he said.

Fight to your last breath

By SAMUEL UFOT EKEKERE
The last one month has been challenging for me especially because of a health challenged little sibling. I needed to hang around to help her through her challenge until she came through it. I realized during the period that as much as I could, it was difficult holding balance in the face of seeing a loving little sibling battle for her life. In the face of it though, I managed to garner enough motivation to help her believe. I’ve learnt over and over again that at the juncture when we find ourselves between life and death, we are often left with a ludicrous choice, a voice that tells us this side of life isn’t worth living in after-all.
The total essence of our existence in life is centered on a struggle to survive. We do all we do in life just so that our eyes could still be open to this side of life where it seems we have the ability to control because we have no idea what life at the other side looks like. This wrangling thought is what propels us to do all we can do, how we can do it and when we can do it to ensure we get off the sickbed straight into life.

Is there money involved in literature in Nigeria? -Iquo Eke

Iquo Eke

Writer  and performance poet, Iquo Diana-Abasi Eke, who always holds her audience spellbound while on stage, in this interview with ADA DIKE, speaks on her engagement on performance poetry, the need for parents to encourage their children to learn indigenous languages and other riveting issues.

------
Many years ago, performance poetry was not the trend, but today, it is gaining ground. It has become an untapped goldmine and an area people need to explore. Can you tell us about your engagement in this genre of literature?
Well, for me, performance poetry just happened to be one way of making myself heard and I am grateful to the universe that I have that capacity to not just put poems down but, have the drive and impetus to get on a stage and interpret it through body movement, voice, costume and so on. Then, it is also beautiful to know that our literature traditions across Nigeria are largely oral, so it means that performance poetry is not a new thing. In Ibibio land where I come from, oral tradition is a very strong part of our culture. Personally, I am happy to engage poetry in this manner. It enabled me the opportunity to ensure that in doing performance poetry with the use of folklore as I do, I am able to ensure that my culture does not die. It also enables me to do constant research into the traditions, culture and folklore of my people so that I am not only bringing this to enrich my performances, I am working as a tool to ensure that people know that performance poetry existed and still exists. I also do performance poetry to encourage other people to buy into our language, tradition and custom.

Probe Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Road Contracts -Hon Uko Nkole

Hon Uko Nkole
Dissatisfied with the abandonment of the Arochukwu/Ohafia federal road, the member representing the area at the House of Representatives, Uko Nkole, has called for the probe of road projects awarded by the federal government in order to ascertain their level of completion.
The 34-kilometre road  is in a  deplorable condition, with gully erosion that has obliterated some portions, while a journey from Ohafia to Arochukwu that ought to take only 30 minutes is now made in about two hours.
Nkole, while speaking to newsmen in Arochukwu after a tour of some roads in his constituency, said there was need for the  federal government to extend its anti-corruption fight to contracts on Arochukwu/Ohafia road.
A community leader, Mazi Jideofor Kanu, who spoke on behalf of Akanu/Ania group of villages, said the transportation of farm produce in commercial quantity from Ohafia, Arochukwu, Ihechiowa and Ututu to communities in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States has been truncated and wondered when the trauma on the road would end.
However, the president-general Nzuko Arochukwu, Mazi Nnamdi Udoh, said there is no time for apportioning blame on what has delayed the rehabilitation of the Arochukwu/Ohafia road because it will not help the local people who pass through the agony while traveling on the road.
Udoh called on the Federal Government to urgently deploy a competent construction firm to take over the
project and complete it.
