London general practitioner bags three awards

NIGERIANS in the UK may finally be coming round to watching their eating habits as a way of preventing illnesses like diabetes and hypertension due to a campaign led by Dr Nkem Thompson who has bagged three accolades this year for her efforts.

Dr Thompson, 40, is a London general practitioner who urges her patients to watch what they eat, engage in exercise and live healthy lifestyles, rather than wait until they fall ill and seek medical attention. Her work is gradually gaining recognition and this year, she has picked up three awards, becoming the first ever medical professional to accomplish this feat.

On October 27, Dr Thompson won the Gathering of Africa's Best (Gab) Award for Excellence for contributions in the area of health and five  days later, she won the Life Changers Female Personality of The Year Award. Earlier in the year, in May, Dr Thompson dubbed The Motivational Medic, had picked up the Women4Africa Motivational Speaker of The Year Award too.

Dr Thompson said: “What pleases me most about these awards is that they pave the way for more people to hear the message I have to share. My message is about how to use a healthy lifestyle to prevent and reverse illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension and how to use it to achieve peak performance at work, home, business or play.

"I am grateful to the Almighty for these opportunities because of the people who get to benefit from the information. It’s been a wonderful year and I thank the Women4Africa, Gab and Life Changers awards teams for nominating and voting for me to win the various awards this year."

A motivational speaker who gives numerous public speeches nationwide, Dr Thompson's popular Pillars of A Healthy Lifestyle form the foundation for her talks, coaching programmes, and consultation programmes. A qualified professional peak performance coach, Dr Thompson recently spoke at the House of Commons as part of the Black History Month celebrations.

In addition, she was recognised as one of 10 Nigerians of note in the diaspora, in the maiden edition of the Nigerian House of Representatives' Wazobia Diasporan magazine published  in June. Dr Thompson is the author of several books including the popular Inspirational Blueprints of Personal Success for Women and is currently working on a new health-related book due out next year.
